With auto parts store shelves full of different brake fluids, you have probably wondered a time or two if there is brake fluid that can make your brakes perform better?
For the average driver, the answer is no. Unless you drive on a racetrack or if your brakes are used in extreme conditions and used to make hard stops, there is no reason to spend lots of time shopping the brake fluid aisle. Those situations are not for the average driver.
Grab your owner’s manual and see what the manufacturer recommends. Only the brake fluid recommended there is best suited for your brakes.
Since brake fluid is one of the most important fluids for your vehicle, as your brakes cannot work without it, mixing brake fluids is not a good idea. In a pinch if you need to, DOTS 3, 4 and 5 can be mixed but, but it is not ideal and not recommend having the mix for too long. If you ever do this, allow only a short time before you bring it in for servicing. Have the technician empty and flush your brake fluid before hitting the road again.
Keeping your brake fluid changed regularly, so it is always clean is the best plan to keep your brakes in tip-top shape.
All you need to do is stick to your owner’s manual and not get tricked by words such as "premium" or "superior" and your brakes will work just fine!
